Paros is a Greek island in the central Aegean Sea known for its beaches, traditional villages, and historical significance. The capital, Parikia, serves as a transportation hub and is home to the Panagia Ekatontapiliani, a 4th-century Byzantine church. Historically, Paros was famous for its fine white marble, giving rise to the term “Parian.” Today, it is a popular tourist destination with numerous beaches and a favored windsurfing location due to strong winds.
The island’s ancient names included Plateia, Demetrias, and Strongyle, among others. Parikia, the capital, features traditional Cycladic architecture with whitewashed houses, blue-painted doors, and picturesque gardens. The town also hosts remains of a medieval castle, an ancient temple of Apollo, and an ancient cemetery.
The Panagia Ekatontapiliani church, said to be founded by Saint Helen, features early Christian architecture and a cruciform font. The Archaeological Museum of Paros, located in Parikia, houses various finds from the island, including a fragment of the Parian Chronicle, which records ancient Greek history from 1500 BC to 264 BC.
Naoussa is a picturesque fishing village on the north side of Paros island, situated in a spacious natural harbor within a large bay, 10 kilometers east of the capital, Parikia. Known as one of the prettiest villages in the Cyclades, Naoussa has retained its traditional charm despite tourism development. The village features whitewashed, flower-adorned houses, tiny churches, and chapels along narrow, stone-paved streets. The port is lined with colorful fishing boats and remnants of a Venetian castle, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
Naoussa offers a variety of taverns, ouzeries, bars, and nightclubs, making it one of the island’s liveliest spots. The area is famous for its golden beaches, including Kolymbithres, Agioi Anargyri, and Monastiri. Notable churches include the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin and the Church of Agios Nikolaos, which houses a Byzantine Museum with 13th-century icons. The village also has several Byzantine-era monuments and nearby archaeological sites.
Every year on August 23rd, Naoussa hosts a festivity celebrating the Assumption of the Virgin, featuring a reenactment of pirate raids, fireworks, and all-night eating and dancing.
Drios Harbor, on the southeast side of Paros, was historically significant as an anchorage for the Turkish fleet during Ottoman rule (1537–1832). On the eastern side of the island, the “villages of Kephalos”—Prodromos, Marmara, and Marpissa—are rich in antiquities and likely occupy an ancient town site.
These villages, named after the hill of Kephalos, feature the monastery of Agios Antonios and the ruins of a medieval Venetian castle. Lefkes, an inland mountain village 10 km from Parikia, was the center of the municipality of Iria in the late 19th century, achieving significant economic development before many residents moved to Athens in the 1970s. Recently, tourism has revitalized Lefkes, leading to home reconstruction and landscaping, and it is now part of the municipality of Paros following the Kapodistrias reform.
